Japan Releases Surplus -- Rice Prices Drop

Japan has been stockpiling huge quantities of rice that they bought from the US, but have been prevented from re-exporting by prior agreement. They have apparently received permission or will shortly from the US to sell off their extra which has resulted in an easing of global prices in the markets today. In addition Pakistan is also set to resume exporting.

ed.z.: I am glad to hear that extra rice will at least be on the market, albeit at higher prices than last year.

"free markets"

Sadly, this is how most markets work in practice -- big players manipulate the prices with secret mechanisms.

IMO the "free trade" is mainly a fiction aimed to persuade others to play by some rules, to make them "compete" with industrial and financial behemoths....

Hmm...

The easing of exporting restrictions is leading to an 'easing of global prices' including the countries that had restrictions to protect the locals from high prices.

I think there's a lesson to be learned somewhere in there.
