The Senate has passed a "Resolution of Disapproval" regarding
an FCC
decision to allow more media consolidation in key markets
The disapproval measure was introduced and lead by Senator
Dorgan. This isn't binding yet but is a clear indicator they
think the FCC has gone too far in appeasing the large media
conglomerates. The House is working on similar, and even if
it passes it will be most likely vetoed by the executive,
this go around anyway. Both Senators Clinton and Obama were
cosponsors of the resolution, and there are some big Rs on
the list there as well, like Stevens and Inouye.
.."“The FCC is supposed to be a referee for the media
industry, but instead they’ve been cheerleaders in favor of
more consolidation,” said Dorgan. “Diverse, independent and
local media sources are essential to ensuring that the public
has access to a variety of information.”"
Here is the text of the
resolution S.J.RES.28 (very short) " Resolved by the
Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of
America in Congress assembled, That Congress disapproves the
rule submitted by the Federal Communications Commission
relating to broadcast media ownership (Report and Order FCC
07-216), received by Congress on February 22, 2008, and such
rule shall have no force or effect.”
Interestingly, this is the same senator who introduced the
net neutrality bill (PDF).
