Rare US Coins Found at Shipwreck Site

Sport divers working old wrecks in the US Gulf of Mexico in relatively shallow water found an old coastal paddle wheeler that sank in the 1800s carrying a hoard of the first US minted gold coins along with other bounty. Appraisers think some of the coins, the ones in the best condition, might be worth as much as $100,000 a piece.

.."Those coins were struck at Mints in New Orleans; Charlotte, N.C.; and Dahlonega, Ga. The Charlotte and Dahlonega Mints operated from 1838, when the first significant U.S. gold deposits were found in those areas, until the start of the Civil War in 1861, said Douglas Mudd, curator of the American Numismatic Association's Money Museum in Denver. Neither reopened."

ed.z.: Sport plus fun plus archeology plus history = *Bonanza*. Imagine the rush when the first guy saw the first coin underwater and the realization sunk in? Wow weee and stuff...best I ever did was hit a very old dump from the 1700s and salvage some cast iron and brass stuff I sold. And then turn down a job with Mel Fisher. Close but no cigar there :( /kicks self at least once a year..
