Not what you might think! Hardly anyone loves junk email, but the
pork like experience meat in a can is a hit in Hawaii, so
much so that now fastfood rivals are incorporating it into the
normal menu.
..."Despite being one of the least-populated states, Hawaii
leads the nation in consumption of the Hormel Foods Corp.
product. It has been a hit ever since World War II. Isle
residents consume more than 5 million pounds (2.3 million kilos)
of Spam a year, an average of about six cans for every man, woman
and child."..more there
ed: I admit it! The yard jackals and I share one can a year of
spam. I usually keep a few cans on the shelves and rotate out the
older can. Zingy enough flavor, but kinda extra salty
though....but... from a *technological* point of view, it's
some amazing stuff, probably last longer than the pyramids...
OK, so what's your favorite strange food you might be
reluctant to admit you have a taste for? Fess up!
...now I bet I ate some when I was a little boy. Used to go visit relatives in a neighborhood that was mostly all first generation central europe immigrants, mostly german, polish and hungarian from what I recall, and ate all over the block at different kids folk's houses. It was cool, no matter where you went to play, some lady would come out in the yard and drag you in to eat. Wayyyy cool! It didn't matter who you were or if they knew you or not, just some hardcoded DNA thing -> "see kid-stuff food in kid". I ate a lot of food I don't remember the names of but most of it was outstanding.. I do remember kielbasa and kapusta, still eat that. I don't remember trying any of the chige soup though, I looked that up too, some korean soup. The description sounds good though..
Just in case anybody thinks this is bunk, I had a friend a few years ago who grew up in Hawaii.
He speaks lovingly of the fronds of Marijuana that he played in as a youth - and showed my children how to cook numerous dishes based on SPAM.
Oh, and my favorite strange food? Canned smoked mussels in Canola oil. I love 'em. It's a treat I endow myself to about once a week, when I want to congratulate myself or when I just feel like it. Boohya!
Cant be as bad as me importing small jars of Cockles (small shell fish that live in sand) soaked in vinegar from England. I picked up the habit when I lived in England as a student.. my wifes nose cringes at the smell but then again she eats mashed sour green mangoes mixed with garlic and chili.
For me, it's marmite. My wife's family thinks I'm nuts to eat it on toast for breakfast- but I have to hide the jar from Christopher, who at age 2 got a spoon and ate a whole jar in one sitting.
I actually looked up the Nutritional Data for Spam, fats and salt and calorie intake are not too bad, the only down side I can see is Spam contains little in the way of fibre and vitamins.
With old sour - basically lime or sour orange put up with hot pepers (bird, lady finger, goat) and perhaps some salt - I am not an expert on making the stuff.
With catsup.
With the last two or a combo of them it makes a good sandwich, is good with grits and cheese, and various other ways.
It is tasty fried out and fixed. I am not for eating it unfried though. Don't eat it much these days though.
Seems like the corned beef thing in much of the Pacific Islands. Every time I threw something in a garbage can in Fiji it seemed there was an empty corned beef tin sitting at the top of the pile. :)
Spam is huge in pacific islands and much of asia. here in the U.S. spam is in all the Asian grocery stores, small amounts used in dishes based on tofu, rice, noodles, stir-fried veggie, pickled veggies (e.g. soups with kimchi). So not surprising Hawaii is plugged into the Spam!
my guilty junk food, which I used to do a lot of in college years but not even once a year now, was cheddar spray cheese on Fritos Yuck, chemical crap, I know. hmm, haven't done that this year or last, time to hit the supermarket, just do a few...it's Father's Day this weekend, after all
HAHAAHAHA! Just got served a dinner of spam fried with apple slices and potato salad and tiny corn bread muffins. I was talking out loud yesterday about this story, so today I get the "surprise" dinner. too funny!
Where they Love Spam
