An Australian will be living in an underwater habitat to see if it is possible to have a relatively closed system for sustainability. The accommodations include algae tanks for the air system and an exercise bike that is also a generator.

" Lloyd Godson, 29, believes he can survive inside his airtight steel box by growing algae to produce oxygen and to eat, and by riding a stationary bike to generate electricity."..more there

ed:warning, excessive blink tags at biosub page, but it has the details

Good gravy that site is unreadable! My guess is that he's been underwater eating algae far too long already!

Shucks. Until they make Flash players for 64-bit Linux, I won't be able to hear the BioSub song. But at least I can see the blinky paragraphs!

The BioSub infected my computer with a rather pleasant set of outdoor sounds, featuring what sounds like water birds... but I can't get them to stop...

If this guy can close the oxygen loop with Algae and a few items of of the shelf equipment, the Russian oxygen generator which was always breaking down on Mir and the ISS is going to look pretty silly. Not to mention Biosphere 2, where IIRC they never got a stable ecology.

Plants to regenerate spacecraft atmospheres were a staple of mid 20th century SF. Perhaps this could be turned into a simple oxygen generator for the eventual Lunar missions.
