I would prefer to reimburse ranchers for their stock that can be proven to have been killed by wolves than allow indiscriminate trapping and shooting of wolves.  Given that when cattle or sheep are taken to their summer range they are accompanied by cowboys or sheepherders along with guard/herding dogs, the chances that a wolf or pack will be able to kill any significant number of the stock is small.  I have relatives that used to run cattle on a 10,000 acre ranch in Idaho's mountains and sheep in the Henry Mountains of Utah.

I am opposed to any kind of sport hunt for these populations of wolves.  It would be foolish to allow hunting after getting this species off of the endangered list.

But it might be necessary unless you also increase the number of deer and other things the wolves would recognize as food in the area.  Being anti-hunting is fine, as long as you recognize that the other alternatives are either destroy human cities (to provide more hunting grounds for the animals) or starvation for the animals.  Those are the three choices at this point, and I don't thing many people in the urban areas would agree to destroy houses and buildings just to create a new wildlife refuge.

I am not actually anti-hunting; I have no problem with sport hunts for predator species with healthy populations such as brown bear.  I would just prefer to see the wolf population in the lower 48 increase somewhat further beyond merely justifying removal of wolves from the list of endangered species.  As I am sure you are aware, the population of species that wolves might target such as mule deer and elk vary quite a bit over time.
